Walk every street, for everyone

"Walk every street" is a simple concept. You select a city and try to walk every street in it. CityWalker skips the account and the sync that usually come with it.

CityStrides and Wanderer have supported this idea for years and built a real community around it. If you have heard of "walk every street," it is likely because of one of them.

To start with these apps, you need a Strava or Garmin account. You record your walks with one of the walking apps, then sync them to CityStrides or Wanderer. Only then can you see your coverage. This model makes sense if you already have walks to sync.

What I built instead

CityWalker skips the account entirely. Open the app, download your city, and start walking. The streets fill in as you cover them, in real time.

Say you are walking a neighbourhood in Amsterdam. You open CityWalker, download the region, and start walking. Every street you pass turns from grey to green on the map, live, as you walk it. No upload, no processing delay, no separate app to check later. By the time you get home, you already know which streets you missed.

The reason for no sign-up was not privacy, though. I wanted the app to have zero recurring costs. A sign-up or a walk-sync system meant a backend, and a backend meant costs. As a side effect, your data stays on your phone. Your walks and your location are never shared with anyone.

Time for this concept to reach everyone

"Walk every street" has been a good idea for some time. Most people just never try it. The barrier to entry has been too high. CityWalker removes it. No account, no sync, just walk.
